5 DO’S WHILE DESIGNING YOUR DREAM KITCHEN

When building a new home, one of the most exciting parts is designing your new, dream kitchen. The in-house design team at Eddy Homes has recommended key areas to consider when working through your kitchen design to ensure your space not only looks beautiful, but is personalized to your needs.

1: DO Think About Functionality:

First, it is important to understand how you use your current kitchen. Start by answering the following questions:

  • What areas of your current kitchen do not work for you?
  • Besides cooking, how do you use your kitchen (i.e. Entertaining?  Kids Homework Zone? Working from Home?)

2: DO Consider Appliances:

Before designing your cabinets, consider what you need and want in appliances.  Do you love to bake and need a double oven?  Do you have a large family and need an oversized refrigerator? Eddy Homes partners with Don’s Appliances. We’ll work together to help you select from a variety of appliances and brands.

3: DO Understand Your Storage Needs:

What are you storing in your kitchen – food, large appliances, small appliances, baking sheets, silverware?  We will recommend ways to keep you organized – for example, try tray dividers for your oversized baking sheets so they always have a spot in your kitchen.  Instead of cabinets with doors, try adding deeper drawers.  If you love to cook, add spice pull-outs to ensure your favorite spices are located right next to your range for easy access.

4: DO Incorporate 3 Types of Lighting:

The 3 types of lighting are General, Task, and Accent.  A good lighting plan incorporates all 3.  General lighting produces the general glow of your kitchen and can be accomplished by adding recessed lighting.  Task lighting is intended to help you accomplish a task! For example, undercabinet lighting illuminates your countertops for your favorite cooking tasks. Accent lighting brings your eye to an architectural element and can be achieved by adding down light to cabinets with glass, or up lighting the top of your cabinets.

5: DO Select the Right Materials:

We’ll help you pick finishes that stand the test of time. Consider: Cabinet finish and style, cabinet hardware, countertops, kitchen sink and faucet, and backsplash – there are many options for each of these selections.  For example, granite or quartz – granite countertops have been used in kitchens for many years.  Each slab is unique and heat resistant.  To keep your granite looking its best, you should seal your countertops at least once a year.  Quartz Countertops have become increasingly popular over the last few years. Quartz is harder and more durable than granite and marble, which means it is less likely to chip, scratch or stain.  It is also a maintenance free material – so no need to seal it yearly or polish it!

Designing your dream kitchen is one of the most exciting aspects of building a new home, and we’re here to ensure your design is perfect for you.
